Calling Mom for Free on Mother's Day

If you live in the same city as your mom, you’re lucky! But for everyone else who is living miles apart from her, calling mom is the way to go. Here are some easy ways to connect with her on Mother’s Day.

How important is calling your mom on Mother's Day?

“I just called, to say…I love you.” Calling mom is a sure way to let her know you care and according to a Harris Poll done in 2007, over 60% of mothers in the U.S. would prefer a phonecall and a simple "I Love You" over flowers or candy. You can make this call for free! Here are great ways to do it.

For tech-savvy moms - call and see her!

If your mom is comfortable with computers and technology, it is definitely time to try Skype. You can connect anywhere in the world, and at any time, day or night, morning or weekends.

Skype uses your computer to create a video and audio link so that you can really feel like you are there in person with her. Skype is a completely free service, but you and your mom will need to download the Skype software, and you will both need a videocamera to see each other. Try it out! It is really fun. Looking for a way to have everyone talk to mom on the phone at the same time?

Want to let mom talk to all her kids at once? Some of you don't have webcams or computers? No problem, surprise her with a free conference call. Anyone can set up a free conference call for participants anywhere in the world, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and many other countries. With the award-winning service called Free Conference , you can set up a conference call for as many as 150 callers, and talk for 3-4 hours.

Only the organizer will need a computer to set up the call, but participants will not need computers. This is a perfect gift for non-techie moms! Again, Free Conference is not a VoIP or internet call. You dial using an ordinary telephone into their conference server at a pre-arranged time. The other participants in your conference will also dial the same telephone number and meet you there.

Just sign-up and register for an account and follow the instructions about how to set up a call. Visit the F.A.Q section to answer all your questions.

I used this service to plan a surprise birthday party with five callers from Connecticut, Minnesota, Texas, and California and it worked wonderfully. The sound quality is excellent, and if your mom is a technophobe or hard of hearing, she’ll appreciate using just the old fashion phone to communicate. You can schedule the calling time in advance and email out the information or just call participants with the dial in information.

Tip: Because the call volume will be extremely high on Mother’s Day, you should consider using the “Web-Scheduled Standard” option to schedule the call ahead of time, instead of choosing the “Reservationless Standard” option.

Send an exceptional e-card.

There are thousands of e-cards out there but some stand out as truly great. Here are the some of the most creative, classy, and clever.

I hand-picked these cards because:

• All cards are completely free

• They use the highest quality images from artists and photographers

• Sending is fast and easy - they don’t require that you sign up or share info other than your email and the recipient email

• Some are especially women-friendly

• They were created by established organization so they won’t give your mom’s computer a virus!

I’ll be adding more as Mother’s Day approaches.
