About Me

Hello! My name is Jennifer Hinton, and I live near Dallas, Texas. For most of my life I’ve been an educator, technical writer, tutor, manager, and world traveler but aside from all this….

…one of my favorite retreats from a busy work life has been to find the wildly unexpected gift for a good friend or relative. I like pushing the limits of my creativity and persistence in pursuit of a hard-to-find gift, probably to the point of a happy obsession at times. :)

Why Great Gifts for Women?

I grew up the oldest of three sisters, and our family was very close friends with another couple who had three daughters as well, so it was in the cards for me have a strong understanding of the female psyche.

As I got older I realized that I was recommending gift ideas on a regular basis to my friends, girlfriends, colleagues…everything from luxury gifts, to quirky offbeat ones. I decided it was time to put all this info in one place and share it. Having been a teacher for most of my life, I know how to work on a budget, but my circle of friends certainly includes those who can splurge on a regular basis, so I have a mix of suggestions here.

I also wanted to organize information about merchants, services, and experiences that are female friendly. Women-owned businesses, women artists, companies which promote women, to name a few. There’s no shortage of merchants out there asking you to purchase some wonderful gadget or trinket, but are they doing this at the expense of our fellow gal pals around the world? Well, they won’t get any ink here. Nope.

Great Gift-Giving Creates even Greater Memories

This past Christmas, I picked a nostalgia theme. I started planning this in mid-July, and found t-shirts worn by characters from our favorites 70’s and 80’s movies, but told everyone that Santa had mixed up the packages. When everyone opened their present, they had to match the right t-shirt to the person it belonged to. I got to sit back with a glass of champagne and be amused while they tried to sort out which shirt matched what person.

One my favorite surprise gift stories were making right an old wrong for my dad. Back when he was a college student in the 1960’s, there was a folk band made up of four Harvard students which he liked and at the time he bought several of their records. Unfortunately, these records had been “permanently borrowed” (ahem!) by one of my dad’s old college roommates never to be seen again.

Well, I tracked down these obscure records which were long out of print, and they had just a few in mint condition! This was in the mid-90’s, and I realized for the first time how powerful the internet was at helping me find the proverbial needle-in-the-haystack gift.

When it came time for me to give him the records I told him that I had alphabetized his record collection, but noticed that didn’t have any records by artist beginning with “R” so that he’d go right for that section where the band should be located. I placed the records which I found in his collection, unwrapped, and just waited. Needless to say, he was astonished that thirty years later he could be holding onto something he thought was gone forever.

Inspiring You, Surprising Her

Just as I’ve done for friends and family, I wanted to do for you. I aim to make Great-gifts-for-women one of your favorite places on the web...where you can come and get ideas to fit any budget!

Gift-giving is an art, but so many people of us are in such a rush we barely have time to grab a gift card, let alone wrap or send something unique. So let me help, and let’s have some fun dreaming up something great and magically memorable. And if I'm lucky you will tell your friends!

Starting with SBI

In my work life, I have always looked for opportunities to be as independent as possible, as close as I could be to being my own boss. Our family tree included a lot of self-made folks in real estate, business owners, inventors, and women who did interesting things… like my great-aunt Grace taught herself six languages and was asked by the U.S. State Department to be a cryptologist and decode Nazi communications during WWII. I didn’t inherit her incredible intelligence, but it is in my genes to look for a perfect opportunity to become self-employed and run with it.

I found SBI online while searching for web-based business, read lots of the case studies, and ordered it within a week and haven’t looked back since. Having worked for companies where $299 is the price of one booth rental as a vendor at an industry event, or a night of cocktails for a client party, this price seems like a huge bargain! I would like to work towards a goal of starting a new site each year for the next several years, and eventually use my background in teaching and Master’s in Education to pursue local schools here in the southwest that have student interested in starting up their own SBI site. Enjoy,
Jennifer
